strengths and weaknesses of product and technologies

media product challenging codes and conventions

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products? My school magzine matches some of the magazine codes and conventions but not all of them. This means that if my product was out being sold to he public i would have a huge disadvantage compared to the real life striving media products. Because my product does not match all of the codes and conventions there is a reasonable amount of room for improvment to develop my media knowledge and creativity.

How photoshop helped me create my front cover

When i made my front cover for my school magazine, i had to introduce myself to Adobe Photoshop. First of all i had to set up the correct Photoshop page by selecting a new file i had to change the settings to international paper and change the pixels to 300cm while also making sure the size of the paper was A4. Photoshop helped me because i could enlarge the photo i had taken for the front cover and not lose a large amount of the focus and making it fit easy to the whole side of the page. Also, it was very easy to insert text and change the size of the font and the colour. Overall i believe that photoshop helped me to create the magazine front cover to the best of my ability and will defenitley use it again.

How quarkXpress helped me to create my contents page

When i made my contents page for my school magazine, i was introduced to a new software called QuarkXpress. The page setup i used was very specific to my contents page and helped me a lot. First of all i had to open up QuarkXpress and start a new file. Then i selected project and ticked the small box on the screen and selected facing pages. In my magazine plan i only had 2 columns so i stuck to my plan and selected 2 columns before pressing okay and making the full page fit in the window. I had to make 4 pages. One of them being a front cover, one being a contents page and the other twoo being a double page spread.

QuarkXpress was suprisingly easy to use when i got used to the software. At first it looked a lot more complicated than Adobe Photoshop. But all i had to do was simply create text and picture boxes and insert the relevant information and photos i had previously taken and make the layout follow the codes and conventions of a ordinary magazine contents page.

initial plans for my magazine

Price - £2.00 per issue
Publishised every fortnight
Roughly 55 - 60 pages
Including (regular content) festival and gig information and reviews, games, quiz'z, competitions, information of bands, album and single releases and interviews with some big name bands.

Initial ideas

I am producing a indie/rock music magazine where my target audience will be from the ages of 14 and above and i will be targeting both, male and female as my target audience.

Photography exercise

Wednesday, 3 October 2012

BRIEF

BRIEF
Preliminary exercise: using DTP and an image manipulation program, produce the front page of a new school/college magazine, featuring a photograph of a student in medium close-up plus some appropriatley laid-out text and a masthead. Additionally candidates must produce a mock-up of the layout of the contents page to demonstrate their grasp of DTP.

Main task: the front page, contents and double page spread of a new music magazine.

All images and text used must be origonal, produced by the candidate(s), minimum of four images per candidate.
